In light of International Women's Day (March 8), there's a growing awareness that true progress will mean more than colourful cupcakes and morning tea. It demands real conversations, systemic change and elevating women's voices in decision making.
Among those leading the charge are two First Nations women, who have spent decades advocating for justice and recognition. Pat Anderson, AO, and Professor Megan Davis, AC, are co-chairs of the social justice movement, the Uluru Dialogue, and are the driving force behind the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
They are joined by the next generation of First Nations voices - Uluru Youth Dialogue co-chairs Bridget Cama and Allira Davis and Uluru Dialogue leader Sally Scales. Together they have formed a powerful collective of activists, artists and architects of change. Their work represents a defining moment in Australia's cultural and political landscape as they continue to push for conversations about constitutional recognition.
"First Nations women have played a pivotal role in shaping Australia's social and political landscape and have always been at the forefront of advocacy and change in communities," Pat said.
This International Women's Day, she reflected on the importance of recognising and upholding the rights of all women, particularly First Nations women and young First Nations girls, who are using their voices to work towards meaningful recognition.
"Their voices and experiences are vital in the pursuit of true equality and empowerment for all," she said. "International Women's Day is about honouring women and celebrating their collective strength and resilience in ensuring their voices are heard."
For Pat, it's about inspiring the next generation and ensuring a path forward is clear.
"Our regional and remote communities came together more than ever before during the Referendum to have their voices heard. This is something that should not be overlooked, and I thank all the women and communities who fought hard in 2023," she said.
"Alongside the other women of the Uluru Dialogue, we are committed to seeing the meaningful constitutional recognition of First Nations Peoples. Our journey does not stop here."
