Nokomis Josephine Mandamin - Anishinaabe Water-Walker, Elder, Teacher & Leader

Nokomis (Grandmother) Josephine Mandamin (Anishinaabemowin: Biidaasige-ba: "The one who comes with the light"), was born into this world on February 21st 1942 and crossed-over to the Spirit World one final time, on February 22nd 2019. She is an Anishinaabe First Nations Grandmother, Elder and founding member of the "water protectors movement".

Grandmother Josephine was a survivor of the Canadian Indigenous "residential school" system and founder of: the "Mother Earth Water Walkers". During her 77 years here, she walked about 25,000 miles around the shorelines of all the Great Lakes and other waterways of North America, carrying a bucket of water, to bring awareness, to the need to protect Mother Earth's waters, from pollution.

Nokomis Josephine Mandamin is from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory,on Manitoulin Island,in Ontario, Canada.
